Do any of you recognize this insert? Is it worth picking up? I mean, for $200 that's pretty cheap. The guy selling it doesn't seem to know much about it (kinda like me when I sold an old wood stove I also was given a few years ago).

Looks like another old Buck Stove or something like it. If the part where it goes into the chimney is just a wide oblong slot, that means it would be difficult for you to hook it up to a liner for a safer installation.

I'd call it scrap metal and walk away from it. If you're looking to get into heating with wood, you'll be doing yourself a huge favor if you spend a good deal of time learning all you can about the whole process before starting to lay out your hard earned cash on hardware you know nothing about. Seems like some who had a particular old stove in their past will want to give it the TLC to make it operate at it's best and safest, regardless of the trouble it can take. There are lots of folks on here running old Bucks, Fishers, etc. But since this one is not sentimental to you, you can surely find an easier stove to rehab, or even a new one, at a decent price. THe EPA ones even allow you to see the fire through the glass for more than the first burn! Good luck!

Yeah that one looks pretty good, but I'm going to need an insert. I'm near Romeo, Michigan, which is basically 30 miles north of Detroit. There's a few on there, but I mostly ignored the $1000+ ones people were selling used because I wasn't planning on spending that much, but may have to now.

Someone in Michigan had an Avalon Rainier for sale on CL a while back, on a pedestal base, but those are convertible into inserts with little work. It seemed a bargain at $500 and if it would have been closer I'd have considered it. As it was my Olympic insert was closer although more money.
At that price I would be surprised if it wasn't sold and gone but it's worth checking out.

check out kijiji.ca and pick wlndsor for the city. Last week an elmira 1600 cat insert went for $300.00(I love mine and I dont even have the cats for it). anyway I know its across the border but moneys at par and I doubt there would be any duty. Goodluck
