I have a prefab fireplace, will it support a pellet insert or do I need a freestanding unit. Do I run vent pipe up chimney?

If all of the inserts clearances to combustible materials are satisfied inside the prefab you should be fine to go.

We've had a pellet stove in our 'tin fireplace' for 15 years. No problems. Yes, run the pipe up through the existing chimney and put a good windproof cap on it. Go for it, you won't be sorry.

I tore the tin one right out and put the pellet insert in its place. Made for a better install. Still used the pre-existing chimney and routed the flex pipe right up through.
