Saw these in a rear yard in sunny florida.....I think at least one was carved from a tree which was in place (dead).

Thats great!!

The best I have done was to carve a big mushroom out of a 20" boxelder stump.

Some of the best saw carving I've seen was at Big Sur.

Doesn't take much artistic skill to impress me though, I can manage carving cubes, rectangles and little more more complicated than that. I've tried. Do piles of sawdust count ?
