A friend of mine lives in Romania. He has this wood heater/stove and says they are very common.

Anyone know about them? Small firebox, but the burned gasses travel through a good portion of the 'box' and it maintains heat for a long time

These are common in Europe. They're known as kachelovens (sp?) They work very well on making a small amount of wood burn cleanly and extracting a lot of heat from it.
 
Most of the home in the countryside have those type heaters (there, and other eastern eur and northern countries). You have 1 or 2 per home. One pretty small load lasts the night - to a 'cool' morning. If you ever wondered how people heated homes before oil and coal...
