One of the ex-engineers from Vermont Castings now working at Jotul told me a story about a wood gasifier they built that would feed the wood gas directly into the diesel motor of the bus! The used to take it all over the place, towing the gasifier behind the bus.

Volkswagon made a prototype wood fired vehicle after Hitler wanted to experiment if it was feasible, having to do with his fuel shortage and all. I have a picture of it in my book the history of Volkswagon. I always wanted a VW Schwimmwagen which was amphibious. Has a flip down prop in the back.
