the FL everglades is having a problem with the same critter only they know that the sankes are breeding. Current estimates are above 120,000 and growing. Federal regulation has been introduced to prevent transporting across state lines and Georgia and other states are doing "encroachment impact" studies. FL officials believe their problems with infestation are from people who have released or lost their "pet" after it gets too big to contain. Snakes are not pets and will exhibit no emotional ties to anyone who has kept them and cared for them. Burmeses pythons can get over 20 feet. At that size you might be able to keep them until you feed them one last time. Smaller ones have been known to kill children of those who kept the snakes. Google burmese python and you will be surprised.

It seems as if any snake meant for tropical regions just doesn't survive in the colder climates. Even in Florida they are finding pythons that have frozen. here in Maine last year a woman came across a 5' Gabon pit viper with 2" fangs behind a movie theater while walking her dog. It recently died from the cold. Who knows what would have happened if it got loose in the summer months. They never did find the idiot who lost the thing. People are crazy for trying to keep these things.

A movie sequel...."Snakes In The Theater!!!"

A "large" snake was reported in south Crenshaw County, Alabama a few years ago...hard evidence (the snake) hasn't been found though. *If* it was a burmese that would place it about 50 miles north of the Florida state line.

Ran into one on the river a couple summers ago alive. Couple weeks later it made the Indy news where they found it dead 30 miles down river.
