The leaf looks like Sugar (hard) maple to me. As an aside...Red (soft) maple bark tends to have patterns in the bark that looks like scales.

The leaf is a Sugar Maple, aka Hard Maple. Red Maple, or soft maple, has lots of little notches or teeth on the leaf, and the leaf has only three main points most of the time (although you can't see this in the picture). Sugar Maple has few or no small teeth on the leaf edge, giving it a smoother edge, and it has five main points - it is the maple leaf you see on the Canadian Flag.

I am sick of cutting silver maple and I can a sure you thats not silver maple.
