Some previous owner of my home killed a row of approx 12 big cherry trees by cutting a groove in the base. Some have a little bark left, many don't. some are still standing. Is this a viable option for cutting and splitting?

heck yeah. It's a good wood. Seasons in 1 year. Starts easy, burns good. I wish I had 12 big trees of it waiting to be cut up.
