Anyone have a recommended Chimney brush? I got one from Lowes but the 'rod' is so flimsy and came rolled up that I cannot make much progress.

Anyone have a recommended Chimney brush? I got one from Lowes but the 'rod' is so flimsy and came rolled up that I cannot make much progress.

I borrow a friends 3" brush that has 4 foot fiberglas rods...as my vent is only about 5' vertical it takes me less than 5 minutes to get it all done.

The rods are threaded both ends, male / female, so that you can extend them. They have a bit of flex to them, but probably not enough to go around a 90º bend.

I've seen them at the big box stores, but didn't want to pay the $$$ when I had a set available nearby (they call me a cheap bast***). About $30 or so?

Something like this:

Another easy way if you can get to the top of the chimney is to drop a string down the vent, tie it to the correct size brush, or a wad of burlap, other coarse material, then pull the material through the vent. Couple of times should do the trick.

I have the Gardus sooteater kit and have used it to clean flues for 2 different stoves (1 -" and 1-3") for 3 year and it works great. It will run around the 90 degree bends in 3" pipe with no problems and do an 18 ft 4" pipe with a couple more extensions with no problem as well.

Its kind of a pain in the neck to get up on the chimney so I would prefer to avoid that. Is the Gardus Sooteater setup capable of going UP or is it meant to be fed from the top --> down?

Never used it going up. My guess is yes. I would think it will be hard to find one more capable of going upwards as its rods are pretty stiff but have some flex so they will go around corners.

I have the sooteater brand from Amazon. I take my pipe off at the stove in the basement and go up 30' with it. Works perfect. You need to run your shop vac in the pipe at the same time or you will fill the house with soot. You spin it with your drill but never in reverse or the rods will unthread and if your in 30' and it comes apart have fun getting it out.
