Hi everyone,
I've been checking this site out for a few weeks now and I must say
what a great place to learn about stoves! I'm looking to update my
Fisher, so I've been enjoying reading what you all like and don't like
about your stoves.
I've got a question I can't find an answer to. I had to take down
my masonry chimney and put up a metalbestos chimney in a different
place. Both chimneys ran through the house. With the old Masonry
I never had a stain on my roofing. With the new metal chimney the
shingles are starting to stain. My old chimney was open, no cap. The
new metal one has a cap and I think the soot settles on the cap and
when it rains its washed down the roof. Is this the way it is with metal
chimneys and solid fuel. I don't think I can leave the cap off ? Do you
guys have this problem? Any Ideas on stopping it ? Different Cap ?
Thanks

Winston,
Yes the cap has black discoloration on it. My wood is very dry
stacked inside. When I light the stove I get gray smoke from the
chimney but after it's up to temp there's no heavy smoke. I didn't
have this problem until I install a metal chimney with a cap.
I know the new stoves burn cleaner but They must burn just like
my old Fisher when you guys fire them up ? If I understand it
correctly you don't get secondary burn until the stove is warmed
up....

I seen a new modular do up about a year ago. They installed a masonary block chimney on the side of the house. Well a year later the chimey is black from top to bottom with no cap on it. The only thing I could come up with is they don't care about their wood burning habits. With this chimney looking the way it does, they are looking for trouble in the form of a chimney fire.
