hi all. Not sure if any of you have seen this, I haven't, but was at my brother in law's the other day and he has brown icicles hanging off his chimney cap below where smoke exits? He has a nap insert in the basement in a masonry chimney full SS liner. I know his wood is dry because I helped him split it 2 years ago. Could it be melting snow and low temps. Any ideas? Thanks

He might not have an OAK and is drawing humid indoor combustion air.

I have had those dirty icicles after a heavy snowstorm. My theory is the snow hits the top of the cap, melts, and then refreezes on the relatively cold part of the vent cap.

Nothing unusual. Creocicles.

no, no OAK. Is this common though?

-52 outside, with OAK, wood at 15% mc. Its gotta condense @ sometime.

MMMmm what do they taste like? I bet they taste like grape.

Nope, get rid of the G, replace it with a C and remove the E.

At -52 even a brass monkey feels it regardless of RH or MC.

Sounds too technical. Can you spell it out for me? Ahahah!

North of 60, I would deliver some of those Creocicles to the good ole boys that put that ban in place.
