I am worried about what a few moments on the roof revealed. I had a bird "issue"- seems they liked to nest in the chimney. As they got their wings, I had a couple babies in the house. I opened the windows and doors, and they were free..
Now, I am looking at a pile of blackish/grey fluffy ash when i removed the firebricks for cleaning...

Is this bad?

Did they do any damage to anything? Cleaning? the Chimney? Or just the firebox? Get the chimney cleaned out and get a cap with a screen up there. Shouldn't be any problems if nothing is damaged.
