It 's been very windy here in SE Massachusetts this weekend. For the first time since the insert was installed in Sept. 2008, I'm getting noise from what I think is the chimney. It's a sort of humming, buzzing vibration when the wind picks up. We have a stainless steel liner inside a 2-story brick chimney, with about 6 inches of pipe above the top of the brick with a metal cap on top. I'm guessing that the top of the pipe or the cap is vibrating in the wind and the liner is conducting the sound down into the stove. I've never had this sound before (that I'm aware of) and I'm concerned that something may be loose on top. Has anyone experienced this kind of noise and is it anything to be concerned about? It's kind of annoying, to be honest.

Could be the cap might be the liner needs support. My guess is it will just be a bother but you should fix next spring. I am assuming the roof pitch is such that you do not want to go up now. Vibration usually is fixed with dampeners or spacers of course if the cap blows off you will know it was a lose cap.

Thanks. Yes, the roof is 2 storys up with a steep pitch. I don't like going up there in the summer, let alone when it's covered with snow. I'll live with it for this winter.

You shouldn't have any weird noises like that. Something is loose or vibrating. The only noises you should hear are those from metal expansion/contraction. I wouldn't mess w/ it with all this snow unless something looks out of place, but when your chimney is accessible I'd go up there and check it out.

I'll get the binoculars out and take a look as a first step.

Might be like when you blow across a bottle top. Could be the wind is just at the right angle and velocity to make that cap hum?
