No list. Nobody can give me what I want for Christmas. As Kristoferson wrote in "Me and Bobby McGee"...I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday. Christmas will simply never ever be the same as it was. :shut:

:(

Nothing on my list . . . or my wife's . . . we're taking back the holiday . . . and refusing to give in to commercialism . . . as we have for the past three years or so. No gifts. No cards. No stress. Just spending time with friends and family that we enjoy being with.

Thanks Kath! The boys are SOOOOO getting some of these.

Nope, Christmas will never be the same. And nobody can give you what you want for Christmas. Most of us don't make this many trips around the sun without wishing we could push rewind, or get just a ten-minute phone call where phone lines don't reach. You won't get to do that, either. Damnit.

I may be reading way too much into the single photograph I saw of her, but I get the feeling she'd be getting annoyed with you now that you've started quoting Bobby McGee.

Go out and pick out a present from her for the baby. You know her well enough to know her taste. Maybe a giant microbe. Or a heart cell. How would she be spending Christmas if you had been the first to go ahead? Joining the Peace Corps and making plans to see the Ukraine or Tahiti? Ladling out soup at a local shelter? Bouncing a grandbaby? Or quoting Kris-are-you-kidding-Kristoferson?

Keep that up and you'll be going too long between showers and nuking a Hungry Man dinner or chicken pot pie for Christmas. You've already lived each yesterday and there is no department store window where we can take back the ones that don't fit, are too big, or the wrong color. It's more like beads on a string--once we've lived them, they're on there forever--some so forgettable we can't reconstruct them a week later, some etched on our souls with each detail burned in our memories forever. That string is the sum total of who we become, and what we take with us when we're gone.

But there will be tomorrows when, believe it or not, you will be happy again. You will laugh again. You will remember her without feeling like your heart is being torn out of your chest, when you can breathe around the pain. It takes time. Too much time. And you will never be the same, life will never be the same. But I can promise you that you will have tomorrows that you will cherish and be unwilling to trade away. Sure as rain.

Christmas was spoiled when I realised there was no Santa Claus.

The duty of every adult is to keep that dream alive for the kids, live it with them, and enjoy watching their wonder and excitement.

And every now and again, yes, wish you could go back again, just once........ :)
