Living in New Zealand and coming to grips with "clean air" fires... all the rage over here with the councils as they emit less polutants...

BUT question is are they as effective in terms of heat output as older fires / non clean air models? i.e. do they do the bizzo - heat well/better?

Most seem to have been modified by restricting the amount a fire can be dampened (sir closed off) - what is the effect on heat output / fuel usage?

Firebricks seem to be trendy - is it better to use them or not?

Flues seem to come in 2 types - normal i.e. draw air from the room vs heat efficent i.e. draw air from the roof space, the latter costing a shedload more than the former. Pros/cons?

What is the goss on Kent fires - good/bad/ugly?

I can tell you that changing to a clean burning stove cut our wood consumption almost in half in this house while increasing the heat. The heat that was escaping as unburned smoke now heats the house.
