I've never cleaned a chain, and can't imagine why I would, but if I did I'd use WD40 and a rag
cleaning a chain?

No... its not kerosene, and in fact there is no kerosene in there. I used to work for General Dynamics in San Diego, where WD 40 (as well as WD1-39) were developed (at Convair).
Its mostly refined mineral spirits and mineral oil.
Huh, I have worked with General Dynamics too. They are the company that builds many of the bombs and missile systems the military has.
