Question:

the opening is 2'10" by 2' 10" and i wish to close the opening with a with attractive closure since the fireplace is not used. is there a source for purchasing such an item? thanks

Answer:

There is nothing that I know of that comes pre-fab for such a use. Some suggestions:

1. A company called Century Screen in CT. Makes decorative screens and panels for in front of fireplaces. Some are quite opaque and might do the job.

2. You could use a sheet of cement board, like wonderboard or durarock. These can be cut to fit and then finished with paint, stucco, tile or fake bricks, etc.

3. You could use real bricks and paint to match the wall.
