Have there been any quantifiable studies to show the over all heating difference between a stove and an insert. It could be done with the same stove, same seasoned /amount of wood.
I don't own a stove, but I bet the stove is at least 50% more productive.
 
A lot of it is probably the setup as well. The older insert at the camp in the exterior masonry chimney consumes at least an order of magnitude more wood than the freestanding centrally located stove at home.
 
Stove is a fair bit more efficient- I don't know how much. Efficiency numbers are often- efficiency of combustion- not how much heat gets into the room.

My insert works for me because of the whole space issue, but I have been thinking about a hearth stove. The idea that the insert needs power for any sort of efficiency is a PITA.
