Question:

I have a question about the Vigilant model- circa 1978. Perhaps someone could describe for me the purpose and operation of the two controls on the left-hand side of this model woodstove. The upper handle operates a damper at the top of the firebox

1.When would this be closed? (There is no optional catalytic attachment.)

2.The lower one is hidden behind a sort of keyhole cover. I have no inkling whatsoever as to its purpose.

Answer:

1. After the fire is going well- and the doors- top are closed. It makes the fire take a longer path around some baffles.

2. It is a "secondary air inlet"...does not do too much- but leave it 1/4 way open or so.
