cook on hearthstone soapstone

I'm a bit late to the discussion...but ...since we're on the subject of cooking on top of soapstone; can the pots/pans be set directly on the stones or should I use a trivet? I'm concerned about cracking the stone.
Anyone have any thoughts or experience?
