Do these things work at all? I am not looking to substitute regular sweepings, but will they help minimize build up in betweeen sweepings?

They do work. They dry out creosote and it falls to the smoke shelf or pipe elbow so you would want to keep an eye on theses areas. It does not take the place of an inspection or cleaning but for me they have been effective at reducing any mid season creosote build up. With seasoned hard wood a hot fire and an EPA stove there is really hardly any significant build up anyway.
