Looks like a lot of burned pellet dust lying around in there. I think he has an exhaust leak/missing adapter.

I have a 7 or 8 year old model in the cottage. Not a bad stove, but certainly not top of the line.

Thanks for the back-up Dexter. I remember when they first came out. Thought it was a redesigned Envirofire EF-II.
