I am curious on the thoughts of others as to the practicality of using a 1000 gal septic tank (new) and modifying it with heat coils and insulating the exterior as a low cost indirect water heater capable of storing heat from any combination of boiler, solar collectors etc.

Sounds like a heat storage tank to me. I seem to remember someone on here using one of those concrete septic tanks for storage. Do a search and see if you can find it.
