We are in the process of putting in a wood insert into an existing masonry fireplace.
Aside from the fact that the electrical cord is hidden, are there any advantages / disadvantages of hard-wiring the blower versus plugging it into a nearby wall outlet?

You don't need to hardwire it. Run BX cable from the basement thru the
ash dump if you have one, & to a a metal junction fastened to the to the floor at
the rear of the fireplace. Install a receptacle & plug your insert blower cord into it
