I have an Empress as well. In its third season...I have had little problem igniting.
I have experienced times where the pellets didn't catch the first time. The stove will shut off on its own. I dump out the pellets (not back into hopper in case some are hot) , make sure the ignitor path is clean, and try it again. It usually starts on the second try.

My tech told me that the ignitor never touches the pellets...its the super-heated air that will ignite the pellet, so if for some reason you have have bad air flow, they may not start.
