D is the recommended factory setting. C mode will deliver more pellets to the pot resulting in more heat but a dirtier burn since the air to fuel ratio is already maxed out in the upper end settings of D mode. Plus you risk it shutting down on overfire .
I tried C mode for a while and decided to go back to D mode as the stove is designed for. The 25 PDVC is a great little stove but not made to be pushed to heat more than it`s designed for.
Maybe the best advice on this subject is "If you need more heat buy a bigger stove".
