I took off the exhaust pipe and also removed the bottom of the clean-out tee. Should I have used silicone when I reattached pipe to unit or when I put clamp back on clean-out tee?

That looks like an m55 cast iron insert. Correct?
If it is an insert that starter tube should have a gasket
If you use RTV it will be difficult to pull the stove for maintenance or cleaning
