First time homowner and first time wood stove user here...loving the stove, insurance not so much.

The previous homeowner installed a stove that was WAY too large for our place on top of a tiled hearth that is WAY too small for pretty much any stove in existence. We had no idea what to look for and were too excited about the house. Our insurance inspector nailed us on it and we had to install a new (smaller) stove.

The dimensions for the new stove on the existing hearth were super tight, and now that it's installed it's looking like we're around 6 inches short. (We had to work with the existing hole in the ceiling for placement.)

Any suggestions on some type of super wide trim or something we could look for instead of trying to find matching tile/tearing things up? We only need ember protection

Welcome. Is this measured from the glass to the edge of the hearth? Is the hearth build into or attached to the floor or free?

When I'm tiling with slate and the full size tiles don't quite fill the desired space, I cut smaller square tiles and form a border. This could easily be done on your hearth. Here's one example. It's a work in progress, but you get the point.

Correct, it is measured from the door opening to the edge of the hearth. It seems like the tile itself is installed on some type "board" that's attached to the floor. It's raised off the ground about an inch to an inch and a quarter, which seems much thicker than the (slate) tile.

OK, if it's permanently attached then that kills the idea of moving it forward one tile width. All it requires is ember protection so a 6" strip of stainless steel or copper would suffice.

We would've never thought of that as an option....thanks for the tip!

Copper would look really cool, and a local metal fabrication shop could create a border that matches your hearth... then remove it during the warmer months.

Copper would also be $$ though, compared to steel.

Glass is another option.

It could also be just a piece of 22ga steel painted with a good, metal-bonding, high temp paint. If you go this route I would give the front corners a 1/2" radius.
