Hello,
I have a federal airtight as seen in the image below.
Hasn't been used in many +15 years and now am using it this year again.

Replaced the metal inserts and put the glass in. That carboned up so went back to the metal inserts.
Now the metal inserts are turning a white color, why? Any guesses thanks.

My guess it that the metal pieces were painted and the painted surface exceeded the temp rating for the paint and it turned to white powder.
