Feeling the Heat

I finally got the Shelburne installed. I needed to extend the hearth. Used 1/2” Micore and the bluestone. I needed to enlarge the opening in the chimney to get the liner through. I have a “t” and then an adaptor to the stove off the tee snout. I sealed everything with stove cement. I need to have a buddy help me with the block off plate. I am not happy with the way it came out…they sure are a pain in the…

It is very interesting learning different stoves. This one is much different getting started than the other one I had in the old house. Both are cast, but this stove, even with air all the way open, doesn’t seem to get going as easy.

I think I need to put a heat sheild on the mantel. It is 28 inches from the stove. I am not sure of the clearance? I am not sure what it would be classified under in the manual. One reads 36 inches, and the other says 18 inches. Can anyone help me here?

That came out very nicely. It looks like a perfect fit. Try a little TSP with a scrub brush on the soot stains on the stone.

It looks like a mantel clearance is not defined in the manual and you are extrapolating from the alcove clearances. To be safe, there should be a shield under the mantel. That will make it a protected surface = 18" A discrete one place under the mantel on spacers should do.

My Shelburne was installed last March. It starts up in seconds...very strong draft. As you can see, it has a straight run up through the roof and extends 2 feet above the peak. It's single wall inside and double wall outside.

Perhaps your startup problems are flue/chimney related?

Very nice looking install, I know what you mean about block off plates being a PITA. Enjoy the heat of your labor.

Leave the door ajar a little (1/2" will do) to get some more air to the fire at start up, then close it once the fire is burning well. It's a fairly common procedure on EPA stoves, especially rear-vented, shallow box units.

1. Open the door and place five or six
double sheets of tightly twisted
newspaper in the center of the firebox.
Arrange kindling in a crisscross pattern
over the newspaper. Kindling should be
approximately ten pieces, 1/2" (13 mm)
in diameter and 10" to 18" (254 to 457
mm) long.
2. Fully open the primary air control by
pulling the lever toward the front of the
stove.
3. Light the paper under the kindling.
Leave the door slightly ajar momentarily
until the kindling has started to burn and
draft begins to pull.
