Finally loaded up N/S instead of E/W and...

No worries about logs rolling against the glass. The large cast iron door frame stops them about 1 inch before the glass. They may still contact the glass, but they won't hit it very hard.

Nope, that is with the primary air closed down all the way. The secondary air in mine is enough to get the fireplace really cranking out heat all on it's own.


Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I will stay with E/W except for those bitter cold night, then I'll load up N/S since that seems to burn hotter.
