It might seem that way, but when you're burning oak and hickory in bigger splits, it gives me peace of mind to know that it gets to
season for three years before going into the wood stove. Harvesting and splitting two to three cords in the early spring and then
again in the late fall is very manageable.

It also helps to have a 2.5 acre lot with a pole shed. I keep five cords of the oldest wood in the pole shed and ten cords behind the
pole shed where it's not visible to neighbours. One might think that it would be a pain rotating wood into the pole shed after it's already
been stacked once outside. But I enjoy the spring ritual of restocking. The hole that I leave in my piles is the hole that I know will need
to be filled by late fall.

The thing about a big stockpile of wood is that it only hurts once to get this far ahead. Then every year you only replace what you used the previous year. We're all cutting the same amount each year now. It is nice to know that if I get hurt or need to sell some wood for some cash that I have plenty on hand.

I also buy beer in packages containing more than a single.

That's exactly why I pushed myself to get three or four years ahead. I've got 25 cord here at the house (actually 23 3/4 because of what I've used so far this season), and I also have some at the FIL's (probably around 2 or 3 cord). It's nice to have at least 3 years to let your wood season, and like you said, it's a great feeling that you only really NEED to get a years worth every year. As long as you do it that way, you'll always be ahead..

I hear you Scotty, however, my problem is I'm so obsessed with getting more wood while it's free and available I just can't seemed to slow down! Perfect example, it's muzzleloading season here in Michigan and as I sit out in the woods or take a stroll over to a different hunting spots I keep looking at dead bark on ash trees, tops of dead elm's, hickory's that have fallen, and whatever else is laying around to pick up. As far as I know that " 30 point " buck probably walked past me while I was checking out trees!!!

Can I count the potential cords we haven't cut, split and stacked yet? We had an 85ft ash come down in Hurricane Sandy and we are not even a 1/4 of the way thru it! I had some "professionals" come out with a 32" bar to get it cut into rounds that I could at least move to cut up.

If we are only counting, cut, split stacked, I'm just a social, not by choice but limited flat surfaces to stack (we live in a bank barn built on a vertical acres of slate)

I just can't drive passed oak laying down on the road. Something about the feel
of it. The aroma when splitting it. My wife wants to know if there's a phychiatric
    area on the forum.

    Paulywalnut,

You don't need any mental help, you are normal! Its the folks paying almost $4 a gallon for heating fuel that need their heads examined! Especially around here where I live where trees just commit suicide and fall on clear sunny days! Free is for me!

Imagine my anxiety as a hoarder when my nephew came over and wanted some of my ash. Well, I gave up a full trailer of my ash yesterday. I didn't like it one bit and it took awhile for me to let it go. Today I went collecting some more wood. I feel a little better but I still miss my ash.

Tell him it's an exchange service. You need 1 cord of green oak to part with 1 cord of seasoned ash. >>

Tim J, if you were closer I'd share my ash with you. We had an 85ft ash come down in the hurricane (on the house but all is fixable) and with my little firebox, its torture cutting and splitting it up small enough to use. The tree guys used a crane to get it off the house and with a 32" saw and still had to make 2 cuts to get through it. I just keep telling myself, $4/gal oil...$4/gal oil and it keeps me going :)

4.5 cord of split and stack pin oak and maple for next years.

2.0-2.5 cord of mixxed hardwood slabwood still on my trailer until I pick up my 250 gallon storage totes later today.

this is just what I have here. I have about a cord of freshly cut cherry down at my mom's i need to bring homeand just cut a pecan and walnut down over at dads last weekend. the snow and cold is making me unmotivated this year

OK, Freakingstang, I'm counting around 8 cord that you have on hand, split and stacked.......wood that isn't C/S/S doesn't count (if that was the case, quite a few of us would have 50 cord or more on hand;))

So that puts you in the Cord Hoarder category........you are officially IN 'DA CLUB......

Congratulations on your acceptance to the "knuthouse"......er, I mean FHC......

It takes 25 cords to be a Woodpile Psycho. If you have 50 cords are you a Double Psycho, or is being Double Psycho like being a little pregnant?

Yes, that would be correct, Chief!

There's a few on here with that much! I'm content with having 25 cords on hand.......I'll keep hiding my 'overrun' wood at the FIL's house! ;)
