Flame Height Adjustment Question

The Mt. Vernon AE had adjustments for flame height from -5 to +5. Mine is set at -2 and seems to burn pretty good. What are the pros and cons of burning at a higher setting? I would assume the +5 setting would give you the most heat? Or is this not true?
