My Stihl saw 250 came with a filing tool kit, including a angle guide, a raker gauge, and a flat file. But the cutting surface on the chain seems to be a half-moon semi-circle, more fitted to a round file.

Am I missing something? Why a flat file? Is there something I'm doing wrong? How the heck do I use a flat file on a semi-circle?

The flat file is only for the rakers. You need a round file for the cutters.

The MS 250 usually comes with a 26RMC3 chain installed on a 16" bar. If this is the chain on your saw you need a 3/16" round file.

Thanks, I'll go get one and give it a go.....
