i've got a question that's been driving me crazy. i just installed an englander add on furnace in my house. i'm looking for a flue temp guage that has a digital read out and an alarm on it. it's such a simple idea, yet i've called a couple of different places and i keep getting told they don't make such a thing. i saw something on ebay but it was way too much money. then i was told a BBQ thermometer would work and you can set the temps for the alarms, both too hot and too cold but i can't verify that this would would work. i can't believe no one makes this commercially, or am i wrong. any help on the subject is great. i'm not a newbie to wood stoves, i would just like to make my life easier. i've got 3 stoves to keep an eye on. two in the house and one out in the garage.

thanks,

randall

never used this product but perhaps it's what you are looking for. http://www.condar.com/digital_monitor_woodstoves.html It's designed for reading catalyst temps but I'm not sure if you are looking for a thermometer with an alarm or just something to read flue temps.

Welcome to the site.

It is surprising but as you have found there is not a commercially available wood stove temp monitor.
I have built several versions of temp monitor/alarms. I have two on each stove, one for the flue and one one for the stove top.

One was featured in Design News Gadget Freak column.

I don't think a BBQ thermometer would work, as I doubt it would read to a high enough temp.
A flue temp should read to about 1000 °F

Here is some info on what I built.

Maybe the folks in the boiler room have some other suggestions? I'll ask.

wow! i knew i came to the right place. thanks to everyone. i'm going to do more research into this, but now i'm on the right track. it was 74 today, so not much need for the stove but i'm ready for winter to hit, not looking forward to it though. thanks again everyone.

Diesel truck guys add exhaust gas temperature gauges to their trucks to measure exhaust temps at the manifold which run from zero to 1400 or so. Seems that this little gauge would easily be able to read the temps in a flue. Now an alarm would be another issue.

i just called about the hayes unit. it's in the $800-$900 range. i tried calling on the other but no answer. i have an electronics background and could build something but i'd rather just buy something. i just moved and everything is packed in the garage. it will be spring be fore i did everything out. are the home built units for sale somewhere?
