Hi All,
As a buddy was preparing for the blizzard last night, he got a split caught and cracked his stove glass. It is an Avalon insert--should he check out a glass shop or search for the factory replacement? Also, can he swap the glass out or is it best left to a pro? Luckily, we didn't lose power!

Thanks!

Hi:

From my limited knowledge, stove glass isn't actually glass at all, its a transparent ceramic. Glass wouldn't be able to survive the constant heating/cooling involved. As for installation, as long as he follows the manufacturer's directions, I don't see why he couldn't replace the glass himself.

Replacement ceramic glass is ok if it comes from the glass shop. For fastest replacement, call some of the bigger local glass shops and ask if they sell wood stove ceramic glass. It should be a name like Robax, Neoceram, or Pyroceram. Ideally you also want to match its thickness. For price and good service, the folks jake mentioned are recommended. They are in WA state.
