    Question:

Can a fireplace equipped with gas log equipment, i.e., valves, stems,
etc. be used at times as a wood burning fireplace without modification?

    Answer:

In general...no, unless the gas stuff in question is a cast-iron firestarter designed to light wood and then have wood burned on it. This is because these setups use a manual shutoff which is located in the wall a few feet away. The normal gas log safety valves cannot take the heat from the wood fire or they will malfunction.
