Rusnakes, it would be relatively easy for you to install a flat plate heat exchanger and a recirculation pump to heat your domestic hot water tank too. That will cut down on that expense too along with your otherwise eliminating your heating bill. Maybe you planned on doing that already. Our standard 40 gallon DHW heater uses propane. I plumbed the DHW tank in to the boiler system with a flat plate hx. We were then able to turn the propane to it off when heating with our wood boiler all last winter. And there was no difference at all in how quickly the water in the DHW tank reheated. Some ambitious people charge their storage once a week during the non-heating months just to heat their DHW. I preferred to give feeding the boiler a rest this summer. Maybe your solar array can take care of that business during the summer.
