Last night, I was getting ready for my first good coal burn overnight. I loaded her up with maple (I've been burning soft hardwoods mostly) and opened up for more air to get things cooking. I noticed that before too long, my secondary burn tubes were glowing red. I choked it back and they slowly returned to normal (while I witnessed a killer secondary burn).

The therm on the door read 365 or so. I've had it up over 400 before (door temp) without glowing tubes.

Did I do something bad? Did I do something good in choking it back?

Well, what kind of stove you operatin?

I've seen red hot secondary burn tubes on my Jotul, lots of times, no problem.

Now, if your Ford's manifold is burnin' red hot, that's another story :)

No problem. That is why they make'em out of stainless steel. It gets hot up there.
