Not bad firewood. Stingy to split...but not quite as bad as elm.
 
I spent a day splitting hackberry and I used the hatchet as much as the splitter just busting the splits apart.
It seems 1 year of seasoning is not quite enough. guess I should burn some but it is still pretty heavy stuff.
 
Yep, like what he said. I've got quite a bit of it in my stacks. It seasons pretty quickly, which is big plus to it.
 
I've had better luck splitting it after letting the endgrain "check" a little first. Not bad wood for a fire. And stacking it is interesting. All those corky protrusions on the bark help hold the stack together quite stable.
Oh, and Hackberry is in the Elm family.
