Welcome to the forums. You can burn it without the AB working, in two ways, neither of which is good: one, with the bypass open, in which case you will burn very hot and probably overfire the stove and/or flue, using lots of wood and losing lots of heat up the chimney; or two, with the bypass closed, in which case you will get a cooler and very dirty burn, as the smoke will be forced down and to the rear, but there will be no means of secondary combustion to reduce particulates and creosote.

I would think Harmans are very poor stoves to burn with no functional secondary combustion.

Thank you for your reply. I am going stove shopping this week! Any ideas on a decent stove?

Lots of great stoves out there. For catalytic stoves, there's Buck, Blaze King and Woodstock. For burn tube stoves, Jotul and Pacific Energy seem to be forum favorites. On the more afffordable side, Englander makes reliable stoves sold in the big box stores under various brand names (like Summers Heat). After using the info on this site and doing some shopping, start a new thread to get input on specific stoves for your needs.
