We are getting hit with very high winds tonight (the tail end of that huge blizzard). Only wind here and a huge drop in temps on the coast of Mass. But BOY is that wind fierce. The trusty Harmann Allure50 just filled the living room with a STRONG smoke smell - seemed to be coming from the back of the stove? It's vented out a chimney. The stove has just been cleaned today - and my husband shut it off a while ago because the smell was that bad - and will wait til it's cooled to check it out. Is the wind causing a sort of backdraft down the chimney, causing this? We bought this brand new about 4 yrs ago, and never have had a problem with it - it's a work horse. The other older Whitfield in the other part of the house is chugging along fine.
 
Suspect your problem was caused by wind being forced down the main chimney.

Did not have this problem with the 3 inch pipe being vented outside.

On MA/RI boarder, Harmon Absolute 43, at 5:30am outside at 7f, inside being maintained at 70.

We got only rain and winds yesterday. Typical New England 55 yesterday now 7.
 
Yeah. After the stove was cold, he took the pipe off and cleaned it out - there was junk in it - but it wasn't blocked. He did notice there was a breeze coming in from that pipe - the wind was pretty fierce. Lit the stove an hour later and it was fine. It's been running since. That temp fluxuation yesterday was insane! Same here - maybe 7? New England for yah.

Yep,it even happens occasionally with wood stoves.
 
We live in a log home, it's warm but where the log gable ends meet the roof, while sealed, it's not a perfect seal. Where my pellet flue exits out there in front of a carport wall, it is usually fine ... but those really harder gusts in the right direction, will give us a hint of smoke too.

My over the air big UHF/VHF antenna got turned 90 degrees from intended direction.
