3 years is a bit young for the pot switch to start to fail. Its possible. Pull the ESP and give it a good cleaning. ESP failure is a pretty fair bet IMO. While your doing that hit the rest of the exhaust with a brush. Seen a similar issue with a very dirty pipe.
