We just had a new hearth built for our house. We were never comfortable having our stove surrounded by our wood walls and had a big stone hearth put in. It looks a lot better and will help radiate heat longer as well as being safer.

The hearth was made out of blue stone from a Canadian quarry. The wall was built with 4" cinder blocks with a 1" airgap between the blocks and old wall. The stone was then applied over the blocks. The base was raised about 6" above the concrete slab floor on more blocks and is covered with blue stone as well which is almost as hard as granite.

The work was done by a local mason recommended by a stove shop:

They did a great job so I'm plugging them. ;)
