Most if not all are stainless steel and will not rust. However, if there were iron or steel deposits caught between the plates when it was taken out of service, those could rust and along with any other deposits could harden and block passage of water through portions of or all of the plates. A good cleaning, soaking and flushing (be careful!) with muriatic acid may be in order.
