High high off the ground should a heat shield be?

I was going to try about 4 inches off the ground. My stove has an 8 inch base and heating part is above that. Am using cement board.
 
the suggested gap at the bottom in the NFPA211 is 1 inch. as is the air space. should be open to allow upward circulation of heated air to deflect the heat from the protected surface
