I have a newer Homelite chain saw and the oul cord broke. I took the cover off which hold the pull cord real, reattached the pull cord and put together. The problem is at first pull the line come out but only goes back 1/2 into spool. I have tried for an hour to adjust.

What is the trick to replace the pull cord and get the spool/spring to work correctly ?

Like Matt said. Assuming that the spring is not broken, you should pre-tension the heck out of it and then feed the cord through, knot/melt the end, and let it wind back up. It works best if you have three hands...
