Fire at pellet plant contained
Barnstead:
A three-alarm fire Thursday afternoon caused damage but no injuries at the Great Northern Pellet plant on Depot Street.

Employees at the plant dialed 911 around 4:30 p.m., ultimately bringing more than six dozen firefighters from communities throughout the Lakes and Capital regions to Center Barnstead and the successor of the Timco Lumber Company which operated on the site until its bankrupty and closing in 2003. Timco once was Barnstead's largest employer.

The fire was contained in about an hour from the time the first unit arrived on the scene, said Barnstead Fire Chief Mark Tetrault, who coordinated the emergency response.

Tetrault said that, when firefighters from the nearby Central Barnstead Station got to the pellet plant, they observed heavy smoke coming from a large metal hopper on the building's exterior. Realizing that the challenge was more than the Barnstead Fire Department could handle by itself, they made the decision to strike a third alarm which brought in a considerable amount of both outside manpower and equipment, said Tetrault.

While it was cold out, "we got a lot of help real quick," which helped get the fire under control fast, Tetrault said. "We were able to get the tower up quickly," he said, and then used that apparatus to give firefighters an opportunity to cut into the area around the hopper, later puncturing the hopper itself and filling it with water and a foam agent.

Tetrault did not know how much damage was caused by the fire, "but I would guess it's going to be expensive to fix that hopper," he said, adding that it was unlikely the plant would re-open soon.

In July 2009, the plant opened under the name of Lakes Region Pellets with the goal of producing and supplying wood pellets to households and businesses. At the time, company officials said they expected to create up to 35 jobs at the plant and another 100 jobs in the community for loggers, truckers and other contactors.
