Something changed dramatically last night when he switched from the old bricks to the new bricks. I'd test them out in a barbecue or fire pit. Making sure that something didn't suddenly block the pipe is prudent too. Maybe you'll find a baked squirrel.

If the squirrel found a bird's nest in there it'll be tar'd & feathered.

I got to thinking about it and decided to pick up a new thermostat on the way home, for the chimney. Well, I thought it would be fun to put them side by side and see how accurate they were. As it turns out, one of them is off by 150-200F. So if I thought I was running 500, I was actually running 300-350F, assuming the new thermometer is correct.
