I have a 20 year old MST 36 see through wood fireplace insert from Majestic.
I wanted to put a wood burning stove insert into this fireplace insert but apparently
it it too small (height wise) to allow a new flue connection at the top.
The next idea is to remove the MST 36 insert and install a wood stove insert into
the same space in the wood frame wall. My question is: Do I need to modify that
space before installing the wood stove insert?

depends on what you are calling an "insert". What we call an "insert" is only approved to go into a wood burning appliance. Most times your best option is to remove the existing unit and replace it with a ZC unit that is "controled combustion" or "air tight". Bis makes some really good units, Kozy Heat has the Z-42 that is real popular in our area, Travis Inc has some higher heat output units.
